HFCL SUBMISSION FORMATS

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

  1. COPYRIGHT
Ownership of all submission to HFCL remains with the original author. In submitting your work to us, you agree to give us a non-exclusive license to post your documents at HFCL. This means that you can sell or license your work to others as you see fit, but that HFCL will always be able to post the work that you submitted. We urge you to read the HFCL rights and caveats page: copyrights

  2. SENDING
Put your files in a folder and compress the folder with a standard compression program such as Stuffit. Send the compressed folder to us as an attachment to an e-mail message. The e-mail message must contain your name, address, and institutional affiliation. Send submissions to: rdillman@rdillman.com.

If you cannot do it that way, send the folder to us on floppy disk. Include a letter with your personal information. Send this to:

    Richard Dillman/HFCL
    Department of Communication
    Western Maryland College
    2 College Hill
    Westminster, MD 21157

We will not be able to return the disk.

  3. NOTIFICATION
We will notify via an e-mail reply as soon as we receive your submission. We will notify you again if and when we post your submission. (This may take some time, as we have a very small staff.)

GLOSSARY SUBMISSION FORMAT

The numbers in brackets are for reference.

[1] <!-- GLOSS ENTRY -->
[2] <A NAME="XXXXXX"></A>
[3] <B>XXXXX YY ZZZZZ</B> <BR>
[4] Xxxxxxxx xxx xxx x xxxxxx xxx xxx xxx xxxx xxx xxxxxx. X xxxxxx xx xxxxx x x xxx x xxxxxx x x x xxxxxx x x x xxx xxxx. Xxxx x xxxxxx xxx xxx xx xxxxxx. Xxxx x xxxxxx xxx xxx xx xxxxxxxxx xxx x xxxxxx xxx xxx xxx xxxx.

NOTES:

[1] This is a comment line that heads each new glossary entry. You should omit this line if you are adding on to an existing entry.

[2] In each <A NAME="XXXXX"> statement, the string of characters XXXXX must be made of all capital letters and may contain no blanks. This string is used as the address of this entry in any links that point to it.

[3] This term is what the reader will see as the name of the entry. Note that it is in boldfaced text and is followed by a line break.

[4] This is the text of the entry. It should NOT contain any images. It may contain links to other glossary entries, to existing tutorial or focus segments, or to places on the Internet.

FOCUS SUBMISSION FORMAT

An HFCL focus segment consists of three main parts: a front page, the focus document, a back page.

Please use THIS focus segment as an example. Include the navigation buttons that are used on the front and back pages of this example on the front and back pages of your focus segment. Note that the green target links to the back page. If you wish, you may use the arrows to navigate through your focus document. If you do not choose to do this, then the right arrow also links to the back page.

The focus document may be in any format that the author desires. However, it may NOT require the use of browser plugins other than for Adobe PDF and Macromedia SHOCKWAVE. This restriction is broad enough to permit the submission of Postscript documents via PDF and interactive animation via SHOCKWAVE. At the same time it discourages a proliferation of plugins that could limit user access to HFCL.

The front page must be written entirely in HTML. It contains introductory material and navigation buttons. If a plugin is required, a caveat that includes a link to the download site for the plugin must be included.

The back page must be written entirely in HTML. It contains links to relevant glossary entries, citations, questions, and so on.

If your focus segment is accepted, we will place it in the Focus site where it will be listed alphabetically. We would appreciate your providing information as to where it might be accessed by links from the glossary, tutorials, or questions sites.

We will test your focus segment before we accept it. If any part of it doesn't work, we will reject it. We're sorry to be so hardheaded about this, but attention to detail is one of the costs of doing web development.

We will notify you via e-mail as to acceptance or rejection.

[2] This is the text of the question. It may contain images. It should not contain links unless they are absolutely essential.

See the HFCL questions site for examples of proper use of lists and citations within questions.

[2]<i>, Ttttt Ttt Tttttt</i>, Ppppp, 9999.

NOTES:

[1] Try to make the NAME item identical to the last name of the author. This makes it easier to write citations later on.

[2] In this case the title is in italics. Naturally, this is not always the case. Do not include page numbers.
