The profound disturbances that arose in ancient Egyptian civilization as it shifted from absolute monarchy to a more democratic organization coincided with a shift in emphasis on stone as a medium of communication to an emphasis on papyrus. In contrast with stone, papyrus as a writing medium was extremely light. As a light commodity it could be transported over wide areas. This allowed the civilization to expand, and made despotic governance more difficult.
