    [HFCL TUTORIAL: MEDIA] TEXT
In traditional usage "text" refers to marks, usually made on paper using a language code, which can be interpreted meaningfully. In a larger sense, communication in any medium which persists over time can be called "text".

Once, this term referred specifically to printed symbols. Its current meaning derives from semiotic theory and refers to patterns of perceived data which act as signs. In the same parlance individuals who are in the process of encountering text are said to be readers of the text.
