PROBLEMS AND ERRORS

The majority of HFCL's pages have been created with standard HTML, the "language" for building websites. We have tested HFCL for compatibility with the Netscape 3 browser. However, given the large number of possible combinations of computers, operating systems and browsers, we cannot guarantee the absence of unanticipated effects. Still, if you have a "strange encounter," we would be glad to hear about it at: rdillman@rdillman.com.

Some parts of HFCL require that your browser have an extra piece of software, a "plug-in", that it can use to interpret special kinds of internet data. These HFCL parts are clearly marked, and information is provided to help you acquire the plug-ins should you wish to do so. The two most frequently used plug-ins are:

• Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) -- PDF documents contain formatting information that makes it possible to present text and images in a more flexible manner than is possible with HTML code. PDF documents also retain their formatting for use with a printer. HFCL uses PDF to maintain tight control over the "look" of a document, or when we want to make a document downloadable for printing.

• Macromedia Shockwave -- Shockwave permits presentations that contain complex animation. Shockwave documents also permit users to interact with the text. Neither of these options is available in standard HTML. HFCL uses Shockwave in order to let the user have control of the presentation, or to present animated "movies."

  COMMENTS AND CRITICISM

  As with many academic operations, we have a very small staff. HFCL is maintained by a college professor and two or three students. It has no grant funds nor even a budget line.

  Because of this, we have to dedicate our time to the main project, i.e., expanding and updating the site. So, even though we are glad to hear complimentary comments and willing to listen to critical analyses, we probably will not be able to answer them.   Our philosophy is rather simple. We are trying to present as much information as we can about the phenomenon known as "communication." Our central audience is made up of high school and undergraduate college students, and we aim our presentations at this audience. Thus, we are most interested in broadly pedagogical material that seeks to make clear the nature of communication, and we are least interested in narrowly focused research reports from the cutting edge of the discipline.

  We are not able to present everything that is known about communication, nor can we guarantee that we will always present an ideally balanced "middle of the road" point of view. To those who might point to "missing" or "disputable" content, we would extend an invitation to submit glossary entries or focus segments that support their positions. We hope that this will be part of the process by which HFCL grows.

  SUBMISSIONS

  In order to maintain at least a semblance of "look and feel", submissions to HFCL must be prepared to certain formatting standards. Glossary, citation and question submissions have rather rigid requirements. Focus segments must have two "bookend" pages done in standard HTML, and they must require no plug-ins other than PDF or SHOCKWAVE -- but otherwise they are free to be whatever their authors desire.   • TUTORIALS
    We are not accepting submissions to the Tutorials site at this time.

  • GLOSSARY
    Glossary entries provide definitions of terms and may include very brief (a paragraph) descriptions and examples. Glossary entries may link internally to tutorial and focus segments and externally to any site on the Internet.
